Selling Goods
Hand over the article, take the payment. It is the plainest of the two rivers of trade. Pedlars, fairs, shops, catalogs, supermarkets, e-commerce — the form keeps changing and the river has never once run dry. Scholars call this lineage commodity exchange; this map uses the everyday words for readability. The anthropologist Christopher Gregory wrote that in a gift economy the governing question is what you call each other — the kinship term — while in a commodity economy it is what price you put on it. The naming itself becomes the rule of the transaction. Swim the history, though, and you notice something: the strong businesses rarely run on this river alone. Models tend to get invented at the point where it twists together with the other one, the river of promises.
