The Customer Ledger
What the medicine sellers of Toyama left behind was not only the box. It was a ledger. The customer's address and name, the make-up of the household, which medicines were left and how many, what had been used, what illnesses ran in the family — and, from conversation, how they were doing financially and what the neighbours were like. One surviving book records: «Husband — drinks often — bear-gall pills. Wife — change of life — sanju pills.» About a thousand households to one territory. And the heart of this model is what came next. These ledgers were bought and sold. The price was struck as roughly six parts goodwill — the right to the customers — and four parts the stock already sitting in their homes, adjusted for collection rates, density and the number of doors. A son might inherit one; an employee might buy one and set up on his own — almost exactly the shape of noren-wake. From 1902 the Toyama Medicine Sellers' Credit Union began lending against these books. A list of customers had become collateral. Among the standard contract types there is one for exactly that: a deed pledging a territory as security. Nor were the disputes rare. In 1933 the Nagoya Court of Appeal's judicial series published a volume titled A Study of Civil and Criminal Litigation Concerning Medicine-Sellers' Ledgers — an asset contested in the criminal courts as well as the civil ones. The oldest surviving deed of sale is dated the sixth day of the third month of 1792, the newest 15 October 1892: a full century of customer lists changing hands. And today? In the hands of individual pedlars, the paper ledger is still working. But inside the incorporated firms the contents have moved to a tablet and become the company's property. The road that ran from a ledger to a business of one's own has quietly closed.
The myth, corrected
The kakeba ledger was Japan's first CRM
Scholarship does call it a database of customers. But «Japan's first CRM» appears in trade and consultancy writing, without an academic source attached. The ledger itself was a working book for tax, collection and credit. As with «the three-way good», a slogan coined in 1988, laying a modern word over an old practice makes the story easier to tell and moves it a little further from the object each time. This map will write «an ancestor of CRM». It will not write «the first».
