The Unlock
In April 2006 the game Oblivion sold armour for your horse at $2.50 — decoration with zero utility. Everyone mocked it and everyone bought it: it is counted as the first major microtransaction. Born in software, the model then climbed into objects. In 2021 Tesla turned Full Self-Driving into a $199-a-month subscription (and by 2026 dropped the one-time purchase entirely). The car is identical; only what is unlocked differs. And this model is also the one that found the line you cannot cross. In 2022 BMW priced heated seats at $18 a month and met fury — the hardware is already installed, and you won't let me use it? In September 2023 a board member announced the retreat, and the company confined charging to software functions thereafter. Paid extras in a free app are accepted; withholding functions of a thing already bought is refused. When freemium touched objects, people's instincts turned out to be surprisingly stubborn.
